Oneill Homer provided masterplanning, architecture and project coordination for this scheme of 500 new homes with employment, retail and community uses in Feniscowles, Blackburn. Planning approval was granted in December 2016 and the first phase is underway.
The development is bringing back into use a 26.80 hectare derelict brownfield site with considerable technical issue and design challenges.
Sitting across two planning authorities and partly in the Green Belt, the site’s previous paper mills use left a legacy of two reservoirs, a mill race and a culverted river which required sensitive engineering works to remediate and reinstate the natural watercourses and associated ecology.
It will deliver an attractive setting for development and significant area of publicly accessible open space, landscape and ecological enhancements that provide linkages with the local community improving access to schools, shops and leisure.
